Description: Action concerns a Bavarian section of shock troops who take part in various actions against the French and British and manage to survive unembittered despite the great strain and destruction of the fighting. The soldiers, always brave and ever ready to unbend with jokes in the rare pauses in the artillery bombardment, all volunteer for a raid on the French lines. A frightened prisoner reveals the forthcoming offensive which the section withstands, fortified by the knowledge that the nation has placed its trust in the valour of the Army. The Bavarians then counterattack and two messengers who are captured by the French refuse to reveal any secrets, despite insults and threats. After leave the section moves to Flanders where the soldiers fight off a British attack while a dying Bavarian heroically taps out a final signal on his wireless. This self-sacrifice in the trenches, only once momentarily questioned by a delirious soldier, is set against the presumed treachery of the war profiteers on both sides. Refugees pass Germans moving up to attack before the battle of Cambrai, when the section is surprised by British tanks which temporarily break through. Surviving Bavarians celebrate Christmas in a dug-out nursing a dying British soldier, then the screen darkens and a voice states that the German sacrifice in the war was betrayed in November 1918.
