Summary: Travelogue of the countryside of Franconia and tour of Bayreuth.
Description: Summer views show the picturesque towns and beautiful landscape of Franconian Switzerland, and also canoeing on a river, rock-climbing, a shepherd with his flock in a steep gorge, wine-tasting at an inn and the traditional regional costumes worn at a baptism. This portrayal of a timeless pastoral civilisation ends with views of Kulmbach, famous for its beer and distinguished by Plassenburg Castle and the Renaissance architecture of the Schoener Hof. Bayreuth, scene of the annual Wagner festival, is reached by autobahn and boasts a swastika-bedecked House of German Education. Other architecture of note includes the small Baroque opera house, New Palace, Jean Paul Square and the festival theatre. Present artistic director of the festival is the composer's daughter-in-law Winifred Wagner, seen at the family villa Wahnfried together with her sons Wolfgang, Wieland and a daughter, and with the Intendant Heinz Tietjen and conductor Wilhelm Fürtwangler. Festival audience in evening dress stroll outside the swastika-bedecked theatre. Tribute to the great composer concludes with views of the Wagner museum in the New Palace with its park and fountains and the sound of the Forest Murmurs music from "Siegfried" as the camera moves through the ancient woods around the theatre.
