Description: During an air-raid alarm boys and girls in DJ and BdM uniform help guide the elderly and very young occupants of a house to the safety of a shelter. When an old maid protests that this is no work for children a wise old man reflects on the contrast between the youth movement of 1914 composed of romantic idealists whose dreams corresponded neither to hard reality nor the needs of the nation and the young of today who are actively part of the new society. In 1914 young people were for the most part left to themselves, fell into bad ways and inherited the class antagonisms of their elders. Nowadays they are helping society and the war effort in particular in a variety of ways: boys doing blackout painting, delivering office messages and telegrams, collecting rubbish for recycling, working on the land; girls serving in shops, working in offices and entertaining convalescent soldiers with choral singing and flowers.
