Summary: Reconstruction of an incident in the Caucasus illustrates the use of messenger dogs in military action.
Description: Alleged incident occurred in September 1942 when a pass blocked by Russian fortifications was cleared with the help of dogs transporting information and supplies. Part of an assault unit comprising mountain troops, sappers and a team of messenger dogs is cut off during an attack. Lieutenant in command draws a map indicating his position and calling for artillery support, ammunition and medical supplies. Message is placed in a capsule attached to the neck of an Alsatian which then races across the shell-blasted hill to another officer in radio contact with the regimental command post. Three dogs return with the vital supplies and are then used for conveying range-correction details relayed to the artillery. Gunners quickly find their range, blast the target and enable the assault troops in a detailed sequence using grenades and a flamethrower to capture the hill and continue the advance.
