Description: 1. a) German sailors and the crew of a visiting Japanese submarine dine together in the mess of the former French Naval Academy at Brest. Fregattenkapitän Werner Winter, commander of the 1st U-Boat Flotilla, jokes with a Japanese officer. Japanese sailors taste German cake and show a samurai sword to their new German friends. Admiral Krancke (officer commanding Western Naval Area, April 1943 to October 1944) drinks a toast and makes a speech welcoming his oriental allies. b) View from inside a U-Boat pen of the arrival of the Japanese submarine. Krancke goes on board, then crew files off past German girls who welcome the Japanese with flowers. Sailors then leave by bus. c) Flak personnel in summer fatigues wait with mess tins before walking towards a large house, probably summer 1942, judging from catalogue number. d) View from deck of Japanese submarine as it enters pen. Sailors wave Banzai, girls smile, Krancke comes aboard. e) Departure of Japanese submarine. Crew and Captain on deck. 2. Inside pen German sailors present arms and a band strikes up as the Japanese submarine comes in to berth. Krancke goes on board then sailors file off past girls and are greeted by their German allies.
