Film Number:GWY 809
Other titles:PONIES : a film about small horses [Translation]
Summary: Documentary on ponies illustrates their usefulness to the German nation.
Description: Over film of Shetland foals as small as dogs, female voice warns against viewing these pretty creatures as mere toys. Deutsche Jugend boys driving pony traps and a little girl riding bareback exemplify how these small horses can create a love and trust of animals in children and help German youth in their sporting development. Toughness and endurance of ponies fits them for agricultural and military use (ploughing, pulling carts etc.), and various breeds are raised on stud-farms in Germany, including one type which survives at Hellabrunn Zoological Park near Munich. Final section of film shows ponies in Westphalia cantering around before being rounded up and foals awaiting sale. A tethered foal which rears up is described as making a spirited effort to achieve freedom, although commentary and film show how easily these animals can be tamed to perform various tasks for man.
