Summary: The life of an alpine Austrian peasant family through the seasons.
Description: Opening titles describe the peasant's lot as a hard and never-ending struggle against the forces of nature to safeguard his farm and heritage for future generations. Film breaks into the rhythm of the seasons in winter, cross-cutting between the father struggling with a sledge-load of straw on a snow-swept hill, his small daughter and son trudging home from school and his wife waiting by the hearth for her family. Snow starts to thaw in spring, farm animals bask in the sun and the whole family helps manure, plough, hoe and sow the land. Summer means the cows at pasture and the family harvesting every blade of grass on the steep mountainside. Then autumn, when storm clouds gather over the tops of the mountains and the first snows fall. The eternal, rhythmic cycle of the peasant's life starts again over film of the opening winter scene.
