Summary: Travelogue of the Austrian province of Burgenland.
Description: Film opens with views of the countryside in Spring and village festivities round a maypole, watched by German Army officers in the audience. A village elder calls a halt to the dancing by couples in traditional costume in order to describe the outstanding features of Burgenland to his guests. Roman site of Carnuntum is noted for its two amphitheatres and Heathens' Gate, while antiquities preserved include a Persian altar, Greek statues, oil lamps and glass wares, testimony to the advanced civilisation reached by the city's 100,000 inhabitants. Later history is recalled by fortresses in various states of repair (Rheinberg, Landsee, Borchenstein) and architectural features in towns and villages dating from the period of the Turkish wars. Farmland supports wheat, fruit and vines, and peasants are seen picking strawberries and cherries. Central point of province is Eisenstadt with the Esterhazy Palace where the great German symphonist Haydn worked for decades, an era recalled by a small museum, manuscripts and a bust of the composer. An old registry and marble statue of Liszt celebrate another musician born in Burgenland. Film closes over views of the plain and evening merging into night on the Neusiedler See.
