Summary: Record of the Luftgau VII skiing championships held at Oberammergau on 24-25 February 1940.
Description: The village, famous for its Passion Plays and its woodcarving, is swastika bedecked for the championships which are being held for the first time and despite the war. Luftwaffe pilots, wireless operators and gunners are among those participating in the five different events - cross-country, downhill, reconnaissance team event, slalom and ski-jump. Sequences from each of the events are followed by interviews with the winners. Film digresses at start of Reel 2 to describe the village of Oberammergau, with its old painted houses , Festival Theatre and Wood-carving School. Two of the Passion Play performers are in Luftwaffe uniform and the interviewer wonders jokingly whether the young village boys he sees on skis will win the 1950 championships. Central event starts to the accompaniment of a Luftwaffe brass band. Teamwork is vital in this reconnaissance cum shooting event, as officers lead and help their men to victory. Red Cross nurses provide blankets at the finishing line. Reel 3 covers the slalom and ski-jump events before championships end with a prize-giving ceremony in the Marktplatz. Commander of Luftgau VII, Generalleutnant Zenetti, makes a brief speech ending with greetings for "our warmly beloved Führer". View of cameraman. Winners receive diplomas and portraits of Hitler. Villagers and the fur-coated wives of officers give the Nazi salute before film concludes to the strains of the national anthem and the lowering of the swastika flag.
