Description: Reel 1: distances between coast and coast, comparative size of Great Britain and Germany "without Poland" in 1939, major towns within a radius of 500, 750 and 1,000 kilometres of Germany's western border. Reel 2: common features of the British uplands are illustrated by film of various types of country, stills of specific points (Lands End, Barmouth etc) and film of Dartmouth, Devonport (HMS Eagle, R class battleships and County class destroyer docked) and the Lake District. Common features of the British lowlands include country houses with huge parks, steep hill formations which are a hazard to fliers but are also good navigational points where they meet the chalk cliffs of the coast (film of Beachy Head, stills of Dover, Ramsgate and Flamborough Head) and giant figures etched into the sides of hills (Wilmington man, horse). Reel 3 pinpoints the six major ports and identifies the main population centres, with film of a railway station, industrial landscapes and a 1930s suburb. Details of tidal conditions around the coast, stills of the docks at London, Hull, Cardiff and Liverpool and aerial film of Southampton conclude this introductory survey.
