XI. U-boat patrol. Scrappy item opens with U-boat passing through heavy seas and commander plotting course. Cook and his assistant peel potatoes and fry meat cutlets in galley. Crew enjoy meal listening to Lili Marleen on gramophone. Sailor sleeps while others play chess. Look-out spots convoy and alarm is sounded, causing men to tumble out of bunks. Hatches are closed and U-boat dives, with camera recording underwater bubbles as vessel submerges. Altimeter dated 1940 records depth. Kapitänleutnant Endrass, with beard and wearing white sweater, observes convoy through periscope. Torpedo is fired and its passage towards target timed by crew. Freighter explodes. U-boat now comes under depth charge attack from destroyer. Sailor wearing snorting bull emblem of Flotilla Wegener and Prien's U-47, together with battleship emblem (possibly HMS Royal Oak) on cap, listens as depth charge explodes causing shudder. Sailor listens with hydrophones. Explosion has created leak which is repaired in spotlit darkness. U-boat marked with large snorting bull emblem on conning tower surfaces within sight of three seagulls. Endrass ascends into conning tower and sailors man and fire deck gun. Gunnery officer smiles in triumph. Commentary states that U-boat has sunk well over 800,000 tons of enemy shipping. (484 ft)
