Summary: A staged bombing sortie to illustrate the use of the Lotfe bombsight.
Description: The film opens with brief general shots of a Heinkel He 111 (and very briefly a Junkers Ju 88) being bombed up. The pilot and observer approach their He 111. The observer checks the external lens of the bombsight. Inside the aircraft the pilot zeros the altimeter while the observer raises the sight into position and performs various checks. The target altitude, the speed and degree of bomb trail are set on the Lotfe. The aircraft takes off (shots of chocks removed, close-ups of wheels etc). The pilot sets the autopilot and reads the altitude to the observer who sets this on the Lotfe. The target (a bridge) is approached (filmed through the bombsight), adjustments being made to keep it in the centre of the graticule until bomb release. This sequence is then repeated, this time showing the actions of the observer each time an adjustment is made. A second run is shown with more details of the general procedure - the observer cranks the bomb doors open and the pilot adjusts the trim; the observer then sets the "Reihenabwurfautomat" and calculates the degree of bomb-trail. As before, adjustments are made to the Lotfe and to the course to keep the target in the sight. Just before release, the bombs are armed. A small format camera is used to photograph the target through the sight as the bombs explode: the resulting picture indicates that the bombs fell short. An officer debriefs the two crew and runs through their report sheet. Finally another sortie is shown without commentary but with occasional dubbed dialogue. The bombs are seen falling and exploding on target.
