Description: The film (which consists entirely of animated diagrams) first shows how the altitude of a heavenly body gives a measure of the observer's distance from its geographical position, and further explains, having first defined the sea mile, how the distance between two points is given by the difference in observed altitude of the same body. The film then shows why, in order to achieve reasonable accuracy, the geographical position must always lie well away from the observer's position (ie off the map), and outlines the method of estimating positions using a nearby point for which the altitude and azimuth are known.
