Summary: Principles of laying off and following a course on a map.
Description: (Reel 1) The term "course" is first defined. Diagrams show how following a fixed course over a very long distance results in a spiral path around the earth's surface, and how the shortest distance between two points is always part of a great circle. A comparison is made between a short flight (Madrid to Berlin) where a fixed course can be followed, and a long flight (Berlin to Tokyo) where the fixed compass course is considerably longer.
(Reel 2) A navigator is seen examining some maps in an office. Diagrams point out the difference between Mercator's projection (with parallel meridians, where a constant course is represented by a straight line) and Kegel's projection (where the shortest course approximates to a straight line).
(Reel 3) Diagrams demonstrate both how to read off and to lay off a course on both types of projection - the Kegel being more complicated since the meridians converge.
