Summary: A demonstration of compass swinging in aircraft.
Description: (Reel 1) A Ju 52/3m is manoeuvred (under its own power) on to a compass swinging turntable. An officer details the ground and navigation crews who smartly set off to work. The aircraft is carefully lined up with a landmark of known bearing (a distant church tower). The readings on the three magnetic compasses in the aircraft are then taken for each of the cardinal points and entered into a book (along with aircraft type and date - in this case 15 May 1937).
(Reel 2) The figures are entered into the appropriate equations (shown here using an 'animated' pencil) and the deviation coefficients calculated. The compasses are then adjusted using small correcting magnets. After correction the compass readings at 15 degree intervals are recorded.
(Reel 3) Back in the office, the 15 degree readings are plotted on a graph which is then stowed in the aircraft alongside the compass. The procedure for compass swinging without the use of a turntable is then shown - a separate compass is used to take the bearing of a landmark and the aircraft (this time a W 34) is driven into position. The bearing compass is then set up on top of the cockpit to give the exact heading relative to the landmark as the aircraft is swung round.
