Summary: Description and use of the FuG 101a low altitude altimeter fitted to an He 111
Description: The film opens with shots of the various parts of the equipment. Diagrams show the basic principles of radar upon which the device is based. The antennae (under the wing of an He 111) are shown; the covers are unscrewed to reveal the transmitter and receiver housings. The two range settings are shown (the higher range is not usable in the earlier FuG 101 version). The equipment is switched on and zeroed. The aircraft taxies and takes off. The response of the altimeter to this, and to flying over different terrain and obstacles (such as large aircraft hangars, pylons, chimneys, forests etc. - all filmed from the cabin) is shown. Film and diagrams illustrate how the altimeter gives the height above the ground rather than the absolute altitude. As the aircraft climbs, the higher range is selected. The dial starts to behave erratically due to interference from other radar devices (such as Neptun-R or Lichtenstein BC/R tail warning units, whose display units and aerials are briefly shown). The film warns that other equipment may have to be switched off to obtain correct readings. Particular uses of the FuG 101a are demonstrated - low flying over water, descending through cloud (a simple animated drawing gives the procedure) and blind landing.
