Description: (Reel 1) Diagrams briefly show the principles of the radar apparatus. The film then shows in some detail the various parts of the equipment: antennae, (seen on the nose of an He 111), transmitter (several types), receiver, CRT display (three types), switches etc. Diagrams show the effective range and 'footprint' of the radar and how the range and direction of the target is indicated on the display. Various adjustments to range, focus, brightness, zero setting are demonstrated. The use of the apparatus in operation is then shown. The He 111 takes off, the equipment switched on and carefully set up.
(Reel 2) The form the radar trace takes as the aircraft approaches and crosses the coast is then shown (using film of the actual display and a map showing the coastline). Diagrams show why returns from the sea increase as the altitude of the aircraft increases. A ship is located on the screen and the aircraft heads for it (the navigator is seen looking into the display and signalling to the pilot). As the target is approached the equipment is switched to the shorter range (15km rather than 150km). The target merges into the background returns at a distance of 2km and the aircraft then flies over it. Diagrams give the minimum range at various altitudes. The returns from a marker buoy are shown. The aircraft climbs and the equipment is readjusted.
(Reel 3) Diagrams show the returns from two ships and the minimum distance between them to give separate traces. A graph shows the maximum range for different targets (steamers, U-boats and buoys) at different heights, and the approximate minimum range. Diagrams show the size of the radar footprint at various heights. Again the display is shown as the aircraft approaches and crosses the coast (with an offshore buoy). The equipment is switched off. There is a final note that the enemy can detect the radar emissions.
