Summary: An examination of types of flutter in airframes and curative measures using a large scale model of a Ju 288 in a wind tunnel.
Description: 'Flutter' is first defined and a type of elevator flutter is shown using the model. The vertical and rotational forces are shown graphically and are resolved into a resultant which, depending on conditions, tends to damp or to excite the flutter. Ways of preventing flutter are suggested. The experimental set up in the wind tunnel is shown (the model is also shown under construction). The relationship between two forms of flutter, the wind speed and the mass balance of the elevators is set out graphically. The transition between the two forms of flutter and the effects of altering the mass balance and of other measures such as fitting a rigid wire between the tail fins is shown. Aileron flutter and trim tab flutter are similarly dealt with, with a demonstration of the result of over mass-balancing. There is a brief look at a type of rudder flutter.
