Summary: Luftwaffe instructional film uses library film and animation to show vulnerability of submarines to surprise from the air and detection by asdic on ships and shore.
Description: Over film of Type VIIC U-boat on surface and diving, commentary and animation describe how easily submarine on surface can be surprised by aircraft attack. Submerged U-boats can be detected by enemy vessels hearing their engines or locating them by asdic. Film of sailor with hydrophones and depth charge explosions accompany animation showing principles of sonar detection. Same detectors render narrow sea areas dangerous to U-boats, which can avoid fixed surface mines but which detonate other types, thus making themselves targets to be depth charged by small coastal vessels. (Film of RN slipping and firing charges overboard.) German film of laying defensive harbour netting and animation show another hazard. Over aerial shot of Type VII (?) U-boat, commentary stresses that Luftwaffe must be aware of U-boat defensive measures if it is successfully to attack enemy submarines and support its own.
