Summary: Luftwaffe instructional film outlines the tactical uses of the U-boat and stresses the contribution which aircraft can make to submarine warfare, using library material and animation. (This is first part of two-part film.)
Description: Over early film of Type VII (?) U-boat with net-cutter, commentary recalls reconnaissance function of U-boats during Norwegian campaign, although aircraft are better suited for this role. (Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor of KG 40 over sea). U-boats are better used for mine-laying (periscope view of coastline and animation), although close aerial reconnaissance is necessary. Wireless operator in Fw 200 over land taps out message, which is typed out and evaluated before mine-laying mission (animation) proceeds at night. Prien's attack on Scapa Flow (U-47 with 66587 tons sunk pennant and snorting bull emblem returns to port) represents another tactical use, albeit facilitated by prior aerial reconnaissance (Fw 200 in flight and landing). U-boat C-in-C Doenitz (Admiral) stands before map with his U-boat staff, as commentary states that main function of U-boats is to attack merchant shipping on the high seas. Animation shows how peacetime shipping lanes are now constantly changing as single ships have given way to convoys, best located from the air (Fw 200 F8-AB of KG 40 over sea).
