STARTING AERO-ENGINES IN WINTER - PETROL-AIR MIXTURE, TIMING, VALVE PLAY [Translation]
Summary: Adjustments to fuel supply and timing to aid starting in freezing conditions.
Description: Diagrams show how normal aircraft fuel (B4) fails to atomise completely in very cold conditions. A special light fuel for starting is therefore used (a brief colour sequence shows the difference in colour between three types of fuel). Attempts are made to ignite both B4 and the light fuel in a cold room (-35 deg C), the former unsuccessfully. A diagram shows the superior performance of the latter fuel in a cold engine. Alternatively, for starting in temperatures below -30 deg C, acetylene gas may be fed into the engine from a cylinder (instructions are given). The beneficial effect of advancing the timing for cold starting is shown diagrammatically, with a brief shot of flames issuing from the exhausts of an engine (on an He 111) due to retarded ignition. Finally, readjustment of tappets in cold weather is recommended to prevent leaking valves.
