Summary: Precautions for dealing with ice accretion on aircraft.
Description: The film opens with a brief laboratory demonstration of how supercooled water freezes when shaken. Diagrams show a similar situation for an aircraft flying through supercooled cloud formations, and there are close-ups of a heavily iced up Ju 52. Flow test film shows the impaired efficiency of an iced up aerofoil. Diagrams explain how adjustment of the trim of an iced up aircraft causes further icing. A hot air blower is used to melt ice on a Ju 52 prior to take-off and the operation of the wing leading edge heaters and their controls is demonstrated. Means of dislodging ice during flight are shown - by shaking and jerking control surfaces (ice is seen breaking away) and by revving the engines (to remove ice on the airscrews). There is also a special oil supply to the airscrew surface to prevent ice accretion. The effect on radio signal strength of icing on the aerials is shown. Finally instructions for landing an iced up aircraft are given (a Ju 52 is seen landing safely).
