Summary: The use of oxygen breathing equipment at high altitude and its effects.
Description: A diagram shows the increasing rarefaction of air as altitude increases. X-ray plates show the effects of low pressure on lungs and a laboratory test on a rabbit shows the easily visible swelling of the animal's chest as the pressure is reduced. A demonstration is given of how water can be made to boil at room temperature by lowering the pressure. The pilot and observer of an He 111 are shown wearing oxygen masks. An airman in full flying gear wearing portable oxygen equipment performs some simple exercises outdoors. A Feldwebel enters a low pressure chamber, dons an oxygen mask and performs a writing test as the pressure is reduced. At the equivalent of about 14,000 meters altitude his performance becomes seriously impaired. Three men climb into a mobile low pressure test unit (?). A diagram shows how the oxygen content of air at normal pressures is equivalent to pure oxygen at about 13,000 metres. The observer of an He 111 reminds the pilot to attach his oxygen line. Finally, the crew of a Ju 86R climb into its pressurised cabin. The aircraft starts up and takes off.
