Summary: Effect of high altitude on performance.
Description: (Reel 2) Two performance tests are carried out. In the first, an Unterfeldwebel (accompanied by a researcher) performs mock gun firing tests in a low pressure chamber. The pressure is reduced to simulate increasing altitude (at 4,000 m the researcher dons his oxygen mask). The gunner's performance begins to deteriorate to the point where he is unable to sight his gun and has to be revived with oxygen. He rapidly recovers. In the second test, a Feldwebel, breathing air diluted with nitrogen to simulate an altitude of 7,500 m, counts down from 1000 on a sheet of paper. After some minutes he is unable to write coherently and is revived by oxygen.
The film opens with a brief shot of a crashed and burned aircraft. Diagrams show how the air is thinner at high altitudes although the proportions of nitrogen and oxygen remain constant. The point where performance first becomes impaired (4,000 m) and the critical threshold (7,000 m) above which oxygen is essential for survival are shown.
