Summary: Effect of oxygen starvation at different altitudes.
Description: Comparisons are first drawn between mountaineers and high altitude fliers (shots of Gebirgsjäger on skis are included). An instructor produces a diagram to show the relative lack of oxygen at 8,000 m, and asks what would happen to an airman whose oxygen is cut off at this altitude. A test is carried out to establish how performance is impaired at high altitude without oxygen. Three airmen, breathing air diluted with nitrogen to simulate altitudes of 11,000, 9,000 and 7,500 m, count down from 1,000 on sheets of paper until each reaches the point of near unconsciousness. A graph is then produced showing, for each altitude, a safety limit and the point of loss of consciousness after oxygen is cut off. Finally airmen are instructed to be alert to signs of oxygen starvation among fellow crew members.
