Title:ERPROBUNG DER STARTHILFE R208 AN HE 116 [Main Title]
Film Number:GWY 1426
Other titles:TESTING THE R208 ASSISTED TAKE-OFF UNIT ON AN HE 116 [Translation]
Summary: A continuation of tests on R208 take-off assisting rockets (see GWY 1425) with the He 116 R (Rostock) in May-June 1938.
Description: During the first take-off (seen in long shot) - the initial attempt on a distance record - a malfunction results in the collapse of the port undercarriage and the aircraft slows to halt in a cloud of smoke. One rocket unit comes free and projects itself across the airfield. The damaged aircraft is shown in close-up. Successful take-offs are then shown at different aircraft loadings. The four units used are shown attached to the He 116 and the maximum speeds in normal flight with and without units attached are given. Dropping the units without parachutes at low altitudes is demonstrated. A static test is carried out on a pair of units on a test rig and on four units on the tethered aircraft. In the latter test paving blocks are thrown up by the rockets and the aircraft's tail is damaged. A second test is shown with the tail removed. Finally there are shots of the He 116 after an undercarriage collapse (possibly that shown at the start of the reel).
