Description: A sniper from the 2nd Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry's 'W' or 'X' Company opens fire with his No. 4 Mark I (T) rifle on German positions across the Canal de Caen de la Mer (?) from a first floor window near the Bassin St Pierre. A Wehrmacht prisoner is led away after interrogation from the KSLI's temporary HQ on the Boulevarde des Allies by the battalion's intelligence officer (seen here brandishing his service pistol) and three riflemen. The cameraman examines a signboard advertising the Hotel Modern (Running Water, Rooms with Baths, Modern Facilities, Renowned Cuisine), which is all that the bombed-out hotel now consists of, and beneath it a German notice advertising the presence of the Field Commandant's office within the establishment. KSLI rifleman find their whereabouts in Caen on a municipal map. The cameraman examines French and German signposts and unit route-markers pointing variously to Bayeux, Cherbourg etc, a local Feldgendarmerie unit, an army dentist, an NSKK POL depot, Caen garrison command, the local traffic movement office, the local military cemetery and hospital and a 'Rest and Recreation' centre. A 246th Field Company RE Morris II light recce car motors past three 5th Assault Regiment RE Churchill AVREs parked in the city centre.
