Summary: Instructional film demonstrates by means of a unit exercise preventive measures to be taken in case of the enemy using gas.
Description: Film in three two-reel parts covers procedure for dealing with non-persistent airborne gas, persistent ground contaminants and the surmounting of these contaminants. (Reel 1) As a grenadier company prepares to launch an attack across a lightly wooded plain in summer, a gas alarm sounds. Flare is fired, men don gas masks, determine whether gas or contaminant used and report attack over radio. Motorcyclist relays message to rear where troops stop eating, grease glasses and fix earplugs. (Reel 2) Provisions are covered, gas mask is fitted to horse. Back in front line, masked soldiers attack on schedule with armoured support. Mask hit by shrapnel is mended, stretcher-borne gas victims reach field dressing station. Troops press forward through smoke past 'dead Russian' beside overturned Maxim Sokolov and reach objective. Attack continues as 7.5cm Pak 40 fires. (Reel 3) Grenadiers launch attack over similar terrain. Flare indicating enemy gas attack is fired as men check type of attack and mark contaminated area. Column of infantry behind front line comes under attack from low-flying planes spraying contaminant. Troops cover selves in protective sheets, buried after contamination. Decontamination of masks. Troops attached to camouflaged supply column demonstrate procedure for decontamination. Soldiers rub boots in sand, apply salve to affected parts and clean clothes in stream. One stands naked washing himself in stream. (Reel 4) Decontamination beside stream. Soldier standing beside Opel Blitz in summer camouflage decontaminates jacket with petrol. Decontamination of truck with powder solution, of boots and of MG 34. Soldiers wash in stream. Horses attached to supply cart have gas masks removed and paste applied to affected parts. Country road is marked after contamination, sample picked up for analysis and dated 24/8/43. Camouflaged trucks and infantry column take diversion before arrival of decontamination truck which lays powder, clearing road for next column. (Reel 5) Troops in exercise in summer advance over similar terrain. Range-finder is erected as artillery rumbles. Advancing soldier spots contaminant granules on ground and rest of company put on gas masks. Gas shells, easily recognisable, explode nearby. Soldiers wrap up feet and don protective clothing. (Reel 6) Exercise continues as troops advance across contaminated area under cover of smokescreen and supported by artillery, mortar and machine gun fire. Careful protection of humans and horses against contamination, including fitting stockings on latter, and checking for contamination. Soldiers lay thatched matting over contaminated ground and advance triumphantly on a wide front, having overcome the enemy's use of gas.
