Summary: United States courtroom drama features German cameraman Peter Roland falsely accused of the kidnapping and murder of Hollywood child star Binnie Casilla.
Description: Roland eventually proves his innocence despite the shortcomings of the American judicial system (fickle jury, unprincipled and expensive lawyers, corrupt witnesses). Story which unfolds in court ten years after Binnie's disappearance in 1928 reveals that Roland abducted the young girl to save her from further exploitation by her father and stepmother Sylvia Casilla, who were having her injected with a drug to stop her outgrowing the size stipulated in her film contract. Roland's defence counsel Vandegrift shows that Sylvia tried to incriminate his client by giving false testimony in order to establish the legal fact of her stepdaughter's death and her own right to Binnie's fortune. Discovery of Binnie in South America foils Sylvia's plan and the removal of a bullet from Binnie's back which Sylvia had fired during the abduction finally confirms the stepmother's perjury. Revelations during the trial, which is broadcast live under the sponsorship of the Binnie-Binnie Chocolate Company, and events outside the court point to the omnipresent influence of American big business on public opinion and private behaviour in this democracy.
