Summary: Introduction to gas welding in aircraft construction.
Description: (Reels 1 and 2) Methods of jointing metals are briefly outlined (bolts, pins, rivets and welds) and different types of welds mentioned, eg arc- and gas-welding. The film then concentrates on oxy-acetylene welding. Diagrams and film show the construction of the welding torch and correct and incorrect types of flame. Welds resulting from excess oxygen and excess acetylene are examined and their defects pointed out. The distance of the torch from the work piece, angle of approach and direction of movement for different metals and gauges are all described and shown with examples of incorrect practice and their results.
(Reels 3 and 4) Problems of cracking due to welding too large objects are indicated. Testing welds on plates and pipes is shown. The warping effect of welding and means of counteracting dimensional changes are also shown with examples. Diagrams show tests on relative strengths of welded and non-welded bars, and also show effects of corrosion on good and bad welds. The advantages of welding over riveting for aircraft construction are indicated.
