Summary: Instructions for making various types of welded joints and assemblies.
Description: (Reels 1 and 2) General requirements for welding light metals (eg aluminium) are given. Examples of welding a small fuel tank and a fairing for a motor are shown. A number of examples of welding joints in ferrous metals are then given. First, the procedure for welding two plates together is shown - spot welds are made (in the correct order, shown in a diagram) and the plates then fully welded. A similar approach is shown for welding around the circumference of a cylinder, taking care to maintain the correct torch angle. The procedure for welding various corner joints with tubing is then shown.
(Reels 3 and 4) More complex structures are assembled, tacked and welded with the aid of jigs, and finally annealed with a gentle flame. In particular, details are given for construction of a mount for a motor and a tail fin for a Bu 131. Control checks are carried out on an assembled structure using a lamp and magnifying glass - diagrams and examples of faulty welds are shown. Finally a load test is carried out on a welded tube.
