Summary: Film of open-cast and deep mining of iron ore is followed by a brief view of the outskirts of a town, probably Essen.
Description: I. Titles separate shots of the following scenes. On the surface miners fill small railway trucks and wheelbarrows with ore. Another view shows the mine buildings and the machinery with depth gauge connected to the hoisting cage. Very clear subterranean film shows miners emerging from the cage at the bottom of the lift shaft, moving along a tunnel until they reach the gallery face where they start work with air-pressure drills. Miners' own lamps appear to illuminate the scene which is a vivid contrast between ghostly shadows and men at work [ca 1915].
II. View of the outskirts of a town, with a few cars visible and (Krupp?) factories on the horizon [ca 1920].
