- Summary:
- Description: I. Russians bomb Helsinki. Russian air-raid on Helsinki airport also affected city itself. Finnish soldiers and civilians stand in the streets and women make their way to a shelter near building marked Finnish Philips. Bombers in formation are visible overhead. Women in fur coats pass through badly wrecked area of city, with buildings and cars ablaze and smoke rising from ruins. II. German production of giant generator. Despite Britain's attempted blockade, German industry continues to export. Giant generator weighing 700 tons and measuring 27 metres nears completion at Allgemeine Elektrizitäts Gesellschaft factory in Berlin and is intended for export. III. Harvesting maize in Rumania. Increasing quantities of Rumanian agricultural products are being sold to Germany. Members of Rumanian Youth movement wearing berets assist farmers harvesting corn cobs, later transferred onto Danube barges, described as an ideal means of transport unaffected by war. IV. German Navy defuses contact mine. In order to safeguard merchant shipping German Navy clears mines from sea. Kapitänleutnant in rowing boat alongside trawler unscrews horn from floating mine before it is lifted aboard enabling remaining horns to be unscrewed and mine defused. V. U-boat homecoming and patrols. U-boats are said to be constantly watching Britain's sealanes. U-boat with conning-tower emblem of alligator devouring umbrella (symbol presumably of Chamberlain) at sea. Type VII returns to port through channel between banks where children stand waving and past Nürnberg whose crew line deck. Library sequence of U-boat attack includes periscope view of rocky coast, alarm sequence and sailor with Flotilla Hundius capband firing torpedo before ship sinks. VI. Heinkel He 115s reconnoitre over North Sea. Despite unfavourable weather Luftwaffe patrols towards British coast continue. He 115 with triple badge emblem takes off and flies with other He 115s over sea, passing trawler and wrecked vessels, said to be evidence of effectiveness of German sea power. Distant aerial view (allegedly) of British coast. VII. Generalfeldmarschall von Mackensen celebrates 90th birthday. Great War hero in full uniform receives grey horse from Generaloberst von Brauchitsch as gift from Army. Von Mackensen stands in front of his property Gut Brüssow near Prenzlau in the Uckermark and speaks admiringly of the horse. Hitler's car pulls up so that Führer may convey his personal greetings, then departs, being offered a posy as he emerges from mansion. Von Mackensen stands on steps surrounded by his wife and other family members. VIII. Army exercise on Western Front and forced down French bomber. Soldiers rest off-duty in bunker before exercise over open country. Troops move forward past dragons teeth anti-tank defences, then cut barbed wire barrier before "advancing" (filmed head-on) and moving through trenches. Camouflaged 8.8cm Flak is elevated. Messerschmitt Bf 109Es of Jagdgeschwader 53 (Pik As) take off abreast, led by Mölders (cockpit view), and fighters manage to force down French Amiot 143 bomber, filmed in flight and then on edge of field surrounded by Germans. Cut-in of Propaganda Kompanie cameraman and assistant filming with Askania on tripod.
