- Summary:
- Description: I. Japanese rescue Russians from foundered steamer. Russian steamer Indigirka lies beached on shore of Hokkaido near Wakkanai. Ship marked Nippon Salvage Co Ltd stands offshore as frogman prepares to descend. Japanese bring ashore some of the four hundred rescued crew and passengers on stretchers. II. Germano-Japanese university conference in Austrian Tyrol. Second conference takes place as ski camp for participants in Kühtai. Uniformed teams stand to attention as national flags are raised over snow. Apart from reported scientific work carried out together, emphasis on sport is illustrated by Japanese learning to ski, and frequently falling, compared to more proficient Germans. III. New ski-lift at Garmisch Partenkirchen. T-bar ski lift pulls two hundred skiers per hour to top of mountain. Ski-jumpers launch themselves off ramp marked with 1936 Olympic symbol. Commentary describes young German generation as very promising ski-jumpers. IV. Dutch skate along frozen canals. Record low temperatures in Holland allow the Dutch, including some in uniform, to skate on canals. Icebreaker fails to keep open Zuider Zee shipping lanes. KLM Dakota takes off from snow-covered airfield in order to feed distant islands. V. Traditional New Year procession by villagers in Austria. Villagers in Carinthia proceed across snow dressed in masks and carrying strange symbols in order to ward off evil spirits in the coming year. Perchtenlauf is described as old German custom. (End of Reel 1) VI. Construction of bridge over River Sava in Yugoslavia. Construction scenes precede official opening and passage of two trains over bridge near Zagreb. Bridge will reportedly contribute to increased trade between Germany and Yugoslavia. VII. Intense cold obstructs firemen fighting Minneapolis fire. VIII. Royal Navy submarine crews in German captivity. Survivors from three submarines sunk by the Germans in the North Sea, HMS Undine (6 January), HMS Starfish (9 January) and HMS Seahorse (7 January), walk under guard and stand smiling at camera in grounds of large house. Sailors will remain captives till end of war. IX. Germans reconnoitre village in Lorraine abandoned by French. French forces have reportedly been obliged to evacuate numerous places in no-man's-land in front of Maginot Line, where "French sentry" is seen patrolling in distance. Snow covers wire entanglements. German reconnaissance forces move along trench system before emerging near sign in French indicating village of Spicheren, south of Saarbrücken. X. German soldiers on leave visit Ruhr armaments factory. Soldiers from front visit factory and see casting of gun barrels, turning of rifle stocks, filling of cartridges and giant press. Views of rifled barrels, lines of shells and 8.8cm Flak precede montage of German weapons: Heinkel He 51s (21+) taking off abreast, Heinkel He 111 taking off, Dornier Do 23s (32+) releasing bombs, Messerschmitt Bf 109Es diving, Kondor at sea and triple turret salvoes.
