  • Description: I. End of international winter sports week in Garmisch Partenkirchen. Week-long competition concludes with scenes from men's slalom and from ski-jumping, won by Josef Weiler with leap of 77 metres from Olympic ramp flanked by swastika flags. II. Girls perform dance-based gymnastics. Girls clad in black bikinis, and all but one dark-haired, perform movements to music described as synthesis of hitherto separate movements designed to provide mastery of the body. III. Carnival in Viareggio. Large crowds of people from all parts of Italy watch procession of floats and costumed giants taking part in traditional winter carnival. IV. Japanese military parade. Emperor Hirohito, seated on his white horse, first inspects and then takes salute at New Year parade of Army units, including infantry, cavalry with lances, artillery tractors towing heavy calibre guns, SHI-KI command tanks and light tanks. V. Production of Junkers Ju 86D bombers. Mass production of German aircraft is illustrated by construction and assembly scenes of Junkers Ju 86D bombers. Engines, propellers, fuselages and wings are made and assembled before completed planes are wheeled out and test-flown. Aerial views show nose turret being operated. (End of Reel 1) VI. Frozen River Rhine. Particularly severe winter in Europe has frozen Rhine (near Kaub). People walk across thick ice and a motorboat edges its way through free passage in ice. VII. Troops clear snow-covered roads to allow passage of supplies. German sappers and members of Reichsarbeitsdienst manually clear snow from roads, also swept by trucks with snow ploughs. Other trucks drop sand on icy roads. Train loaded with munitions heads towards front; Pak 3.7cm is lifted off train, as are boxes (ammunition ?). Horses tow artillery away and a battery of 15cm s FH 18 guns in the snow opens fire following reported troop movements by the enemy. VIII. German fighters scramble at night. Sound detector hears approach of enemy bombers at night, causing two Messerschmitt Bf 109Es to scramble. Searchlight reportedly picks out enemy, while ground control plots interception on chart and radios details to fighters. Two Bf 109Es taxi at night after reportedly accomplishing mission. IX. German Navy minesweeps and patrols German Bight. New naval units, including trawlers seen marking mine-swept area with buoys, are protecting German Bight against enemy submarines. Special (unspecified) instruments reportedly alert German vessels to approach of submarines. Film shows escort vessels and capital ship in distance, then various views of Leberecht Maass Class destroyer, including forecastle view of ice-covered bridge and rotating A turret. T-1 Class torpedo boat sails through howling gale and fires gun, representing Navy's protective cover and advance warning against incursions by enemy ships and planes. Two depth charges explode astern.
