- Summary:
- Description: I. St Matthew Passion in Cologne Cathedral. Coverage of choral passages of Bach's Mass performed in this great monument of German art. Tilt down cathedral facade and views of choir, conductor, organist and vaulting inside. II. Launching of Dutch warship Isaac Sweers. Ship is christened and moves down slipway into water. III. British hand back to Japanese Germans removed from Asama Maru. Following vigorous protests from the Japanese government, nine of twenty-one German passengers are transferred from a British auxiliary cruiser to a Japanese vessel and landed at Yokohama. Japanese press and cameramen surround the elderly Germans, who emerge from German Consulate. Freedom of remaining twelve reportedly remains under discussion. IV. German match production. Manufacture of matches in automated factory which produces serried ranks of matches from wood pulp. Workers include women. V. Dogs are tested for suitability for Army service. Alsatians and other large dogs demonstrate their fitness and ferocity by jumping and tearing at a bone. VI. Argentinian students visit Siemens railway factory. Third of four fast trains destined for export to Chile is examined by Argentinian students, who step inside carriage marked Clase Unica. (End of Reel 1) VII. U-boat construction and launching. U-boats are assembled in a shipyard covered in snow. Welders work inside hulls. Two vessels are then launched, one sideways down the slipway and the other stern first. Both boats are Type VII. VIII. Homecoming of U-29. Kapitänleutnant Schuhart stands on conning tower of U-29 returning to Wilhelmshaven flying pennon after successful voyage. U-boat is credited with 66,566 tons sunk on two voyages. Sailors wear Salzwedel Flotilla capbands. Barrage balloons fly over the port and other naval units are just visible as U-29 comes alongside quay. Flotilla commander (?) is first to welcome Schuhart before latter is greeted on shore by Grossadmiral Raeder and Konteradmiral Doenitz. IX. Return of Adlergeschwader bombers from raid on Scapa Flow. Heinkel He 111Hs of Adlergeschwader (Kampfgeschwader 30) return in dark after surprise attack on British Home Fleet at Scapa Flow. Crews cross airfield illuminated at night and then answer (live) their base commander's questions about the raid, after he has offered his congratulations. X. Foreign correspondents visit seaplane base on Sylt after British air raid. Six neutral journalists, including 3 US pressmen, travel in conducted group to see that RAF reprisal raid on Hörnum seaplane base (19 March 1940) caused no damage. Correspondents stand on platform at Hamburg railway station and train passes through Klanxbüll and Westerland. Foreign correspondents wear official Auslandsberichterstatter badge. Dornier Do 18 is wheeled out from hangar as proof that not a single plane or hangar was damaged. Insert shows close-up of (misspelt) English longhand notes allegedly made by journalist: "not even one hangar nor any aeroplanes were damaged". Only sign of raid is bomb crater in open country and shattered roof and window panes of hospital where soldiers help medical staff clear up the operating theatre. Coffins of crew of at least six destroyed British aircraft are buried with full military honours. XI. German railway guns in position. Single giant 28cm K 5 (E) railway gun moves out of siding. Gun is set up, loaded and the barrel elevated in preparation for firing. Battery of four guns raise their barrels in succession but do not fire.
