- Summary:
- Description: I. Italian pedal-driven plane. Italian demonstrates pedal-driven aeroplane which fails to take off. II. Air day in Slovakia. Trainers and biplanes fly overhead before glider with German markings takes off and performs various aerobatics. III. Rowing championships in Bohemia-Moravia. Prague teams win two events against one by home team Melnik during competition on the River Elbe. IV. German workers at lunchtime physical training. To counteract uneven stress on body which modern methods of manufacture impose, illustrated by optically duplicated film of worker repeating same arm movement, German men and women workers perform basic physical training during their midday break, thus avoiding risk of damage. V. Dutch children on holiday in Austria. Smiling Reich Commissioner for the Netherlands Dr Seyss-Inquart, dressed in civilian suit, passes along railway platform patting heads of Dutch children whom he has invited on holiday to Gmunden on the Traunsee in Austria. Packed Dutch train marked Ostmark pulls out and arrives at Gmunden where a banner greeting the youth of the Netherlands awaits the predominantly blonde youngsters. Children smile, eat and enjoy themselves on the lake. (End of Reel 1) VI. (Reel 2) German occupation of Channel Islands. First German landings on English soil have taken place on Channel Islands, where scenes on Jersey show local life continuing normally under the protection of German arms. Soldiers stand outside RAF HQ and others smoke beside an English No Smoking sign. German officer arrives outside officer of the German Kommandant in a car driven by a British policeman. Street scenes include view of Smith Street. Coast is protected by light and heavy calibre guns. VII. Hamburg after RAF bombing raid. Reported death of twenty-two children in raid on Barmbeck in Hamburg shows that Britain is almost exclusively bombing civilian non-military targets. Party of foreign press sees damage to buildings, then have panoramic look over city from top of old St Michaelis church tower to disprove British claims that Hamburg has been reduced to ruins. VIII. Italian advance through France to Menton. Retrospective account of the Franco-Italian fighting in the Alps shows unopposed advance of Italian soldiers up side of Mont Blanc, firing and crossing snow. Signs scrawled on side of French pillbox indicate passage of 21º Reggimento Fanteria Cremona. Views of slight damage to deserted streets of Menton are sole indication of war. IX. Stuka attack on England. Stuka of Immelmanngeschwader are crank-started before planes take off abreast. Triple turret Arriflex is visible inside glass canopy of one plane. Stukas are escorted by Bf 109Es, including one with Spanish Civil War markings Arriba de campo and crossed swords, before peeling away to attack "ports, industrial installations and airfields". Oil storage tanks blaze below.
