- Summary:
- Description: I. Winter scenes in Berlin. Scenes in the capital show the effect of the continuing cold spell. A park lies covered in snow and a bus travels towards the Brandenburg Gate which is surrounded by snow. Workers clear snow from outside Café Linden on Unter den linden, a horse statue is sculpted in snow and horse-drawn snowploughs clear the streets. Citizens respond to the call to clear snow and ice from the pavements; one woman wears a Nazi badge. Railway workers clear the tracks with blowlamps. II. Arrival in Italy of Germans expelled from East Africa. Almost daily succession of encroachments by piratical British leads to arrival in Venice/Trieste port on board SS Urania of Germans expelled from former colony of German East Africa (Tanganyika). Passengers, who reportedly were robbed and given ten minutes to pack, come ashore from liner. Italian and German relief organisations arrange warm clothing for expellees, who later leave by train, heiling and waving. III. British remove Germans from Japanese ship. 16mm film taken from on board Asama Maru shows Royal Navy cutter pulling away with twenty-one German passengers, some waving goodbye, towards HMS Liverpool which has halted and searched Japanese ship not far from the Japanese coast. IV. Results of British attack on Altmark in Jössingfjord. Following attack by HMS Cossack on unarmed German vessel (supply ship to Admiral Graf Spee) in neutral Norwegian waters, which caused seven dead, one missing and several severely wounded, sailor points to signs of battle on Altmark. Captain Dau with goatee beard stands with his crew as wounded are taken off ship by stretcher. Flag flies at half mast. Casualty is treated in Kristiansand hospital by nuns and Norwegian doctors. Sailors from the Norwegian minelayer Olav Tryggvason form guard of honour at burial of murdered sailors, whose coffins are draped in swastika flags. Norwegian naval captain lays a wreath by the grave beside one inscribed with Adolf Hitler's name. (End of Reel 1) V. German reconnaissance raid in Lorraine. Reconnaissance patrol sets out to clear Forbach of French, first moving across snow-covered field and through barbed wire, then past town sign on road. Troops run past Forbach post office before advancing cautiously along street past Café Dolisi. Sound effects of rifle and shell fire suggest an invisible enemy. VI. Germans bring up food supplies. Soldiers carrying canteens and sacks of food make their way forward "way beyond the Siegfried Line" over snow-covered country, then crouching along trench reach position in front line. VII. Fifth anniversary of founding of Luftwaffe. Animation represents the threat posed to Germany by her neighbours in 1935 which prompted the Führer to found the Luftwaffe. Hitler, accompanied by Goering, Milch and SA chief Lutze, inspects SA men and Luftwaffe parade in front of row of Heinkel He 51 fighters (probably at Döberitz in 1935). Luftwaffe has since become the best in the world and is ready for action. Sound detectors, searchlights and 8.8cm Flak, which is elevated, loaded and fired. Bf 109Es taxiing and Henschel 126 in flight precede final montage of planes, which includes Junkers Ju 87s. VIII. German fleet ready for action. German battle fleet is declared ready for action after period when only smaller naval forces have engaged the enemy. Masked film, as if through a porthole, shows Blücher at anchor in iced-up port, then bow view of same vessel. At start of exercise anchor is weighed, engine room shown and turbine wiped. Cut to foredeck of Scharnhorst or Gneisenau shows twin triple turrets, with forward turret with ring marking painted on top and rangefinder housings clearly visible, as ship moves through ice. Full speed ahead precedes raising of pennants as alarm is sounded and sailors, carrying gasmask containers, rush to stations. Live instructions from the control room as triple turret of Admiral Scheer is raised. Shell lands by bow of Deutschland. Item assembled from different ships concludes with naval song "Wir fahren gegen Engelland".
