- Description: I. German and Japanese diplomats lay wreath in Rome. German Ambassador von Mackensen and Japanese chargé d'affaires lay wreath at Tomb of Unknown Warrior. II. Fieseler visits glider display in Bucharest. Glider display under the auspices of the Rumanian Under-Secretary of State for Air has glider towed into the air by biplane. Glider circles overhead and lands on partly snow-covered airfield. German aircraft designer Fieseler steps out of his own Storch plane and is greeted by Rumanian officials. III. Gymnastics display by Portuguese youth. Youths of Mocidade Portuguesa (Portuguese Youth) perform gymnastics in a Lisbon stadium watched by spectators in stand who give fascist salute. IV. Gymnastics competition in Budapest. Germany competes against Hungary at the international sports hall. Scenes on horse and bars. Hungarian Ferenc Pataki wins. V. Steeplechase race in France. Athletes compete in seven-kilometres-plus steeplechase at Lyon (Vichy France). Rochard wins. VI. German medical research at Behring Institute in Lvov. Exterior view of swastika-adorned Institute; bust of German bacteriologist Emil von Behring inside. German scientists have made Institute leading centre in world in fight against diphtheria, very prevalent in Eastern Europe. Display of Behring vaccine. Laboratory technicians breed lice, examine matter through microscopes and artificially infect the yolk of a broken egg. Doctor vaccinates a girl in the arm. VII. Germans repair railways wrecked by Russians German railway repair shop near Kiev repairs bridges, track and other installations. Labourers work with rocks and timber on railways and bridge, over which a train passes. VIII. German front line within sight of Leningrad. Animated map of Leningrad area. Cartoons on hut signs refer to Dr Erich Lengnich (company doctor ?) and other esoteric figures. Soldiers construct wooden covers over trench, another washes himself with handfuls of snow and others scoop out thawed snow from trench with their helmets. SS company chief arrives in trench on daily visit of inspection and returns heils from men. Leningrad is visible on horizon and German front line passes through suburban tram terminus. Russian tanks which attempted to break Germans' iron ring around city lie destroyed in snow. Soldier fires 8cm mortar and 17cm K in Mörserlafette opens fire. IX. Germans repel Russian attack on Toropetz Animated map of Moscow area. Bolshevik forces surrounded by Germans on Toropetz front are bombarded by 10.5cm le FH 18 and 15cm FH 18 artillery. Shells explode in the snow. Russian forces in distance are attacked by anti-tank and MG34 fire, leaving battlefield littered with wrecked tanks including US M3A3s and Russian T-34s. Frozen corpses protrude from the snow. Renewed enemy attack is warded off by mortar and artillery fire ordered by phone. night barrage continues till dawn, as shells explode in the snow. Some of the 4,200 Russian prisoners walk by; figure of 14,000 Russian dead suggests enemy's determination. Russian trucks (with snow chains), guns and anti-aircraft 76.2mm ZP obr 1938g stand abandoned in snow. X. Rescue of Atlantis crew and sinking of Norwegian tanker. Crew of auxiliary cruiser Atlantis are rescued from six dinghies and lifeboats after the sinking of their ship by a British cruiser (HMS Devonshire, 23/11/1941) in the South Atlantic. Small cutter with survivors comes alongside Type IXC U-boat, one of whose crew sports an ace of spades on his cap. U-boat then tows six small boats in line astern, while some Italian submarines which helped rescue arrive in St Nazaire (late December 1941) on board Calvi Class submarine, with German officers on conning tower with Italian commander. French advertisement for Byrrh visible on wall. German sailors say farewell to Italian comrades. Ashore at Kaiserhof Hotel in Berlin Grossadmiral Raeder greets Kapitän zur See Rogge of Atlantis who presents his crew. Close-up of Auxiliary Cruiser badge. Flashback to action by Atlantis shows lookout on crow's nest, sighting of "British" tanker, alarm signal, breaking German Naval ensign, radio operator listening to hear British SOS signal, loading and firing 5.9-inch gun and tanker exploding after direct hits and becoming pall of oily black smoke. Rogge in merchant marine uniform scans scene with binoculars.
