Summary: Promotional films made by a photographic business on Sylt in the mid-1930s advertise the tourist attractions awaiting German visitors to this island in the North Sea, and also record an early Nazi parade in this predominantly Nazi community of peasants and fishermen.
Description: Part 1: Unedited and anonymous amateur film records holiday beach scenes (families by sea, ambulatory beach salesman selling magazines and newspapers), probably on Sylt (tricolour flag may be that of Schleswig-Holstein).
Part 2: Fashionable couples elegantly dressed in ball gowns and dinner jackets dance inside the Trocadero ballroom to the accompaniment of a small orchestra.
Part 3: Swastika-draped coal merchant's truck marked with name of Martin Knudsen from Kampen (Sylt) and bearing family tableau scene heads procession along main street (of Kampen or Westerland) of local businesses and public bodies demonstrating support for the Nazi party (NSDAP) recently elected to power. SA brownshirts parade past the Bahnhof (Railway) Hotel, greeted by some elderly ladies and young boys with the Nazi salute (heil), and followed by spade-bearing members of the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD), their mouths open in song. One unit of SA brownshirts is headed by a bearded man [ie before the banning of follicular excrescences among Party members]. Boys in the Hitler Youth (HJ) and older men in uniform (firemen or another association) bring up the rear of the procession marking this festive occasion (possibly Labour Day on 1st May), in appearance more spontaneous than organised.
Part 4: German tourists embark on a small oyster fishing boat, entertained by an accordeonist and by the chance to eat fresh oysters from the shell, off the coast of Sylt. (Agfa 1936 film leader)
Part 5: Official celebrations to mark the five hundred years of Westerland include a torch-lit night parade by men of the (newly formed) Luftwaffe from their air base at List on Sylt (which happens to pass the illuminated sign of a photographic shop - Pförtner's?), a concert outside the town hall by musicians of the German Air Force and a Horse Riding Festival where riders test their skills with lances against suspended targets.
