Summary: Churchill visits troops in the Western Desert. 1st South African Division at El Alamein.
Description: Winston Churchill at Eighth Army HQ with General Sir Alan Brooke and General Alexander. They are met by General Montgomery. They walk towards the sea and chat. An Indian sentry stands guard. The Prime Minister returns to his caravan to spend the night. The following day he visits all British regiments in the 22nd Armoured Brigade and also the New Zealand Corps. Later he visits his old regiment the 4th Queen's Own Hussars (of which he is now honorary colonel). He receives a cheer from the New Zealanders. He has lunch with General Freyberg, GOC New Zealand troops. He is accompanied by Lieutenant-General Montgomery and General Horrocks.
19 August. Bruce Anderson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation records messages at the 1st South African Division from some of the men decorated in the recent campaign. Sergeant Wallace sends a message to his family in Cape Town. Sapper Willy Stephens of the 3rd Field Engineers sends a message to his mother in Cape Town. The messages are recorded onto a record and played at a later date.
18 August. Troops relax during a lull at Alamein on the station platform signed as Heaven. The new Eighth Army Commander Lieutenant-General Montgomery visits the front wearing an old Australian hat. He is accompanied by Brigadier R W Tovell, General Morshead and Lieutenant-General Herbert Lumsden, Commander of 10 Corps.
