Narrator tells of Russia's "overstretched economy" - shots of munitions factory, people queuing for supplies. Petrograd in winter - "two million freezing for lack of fuel". March l917 - prelude to revolution - shots of people marching, armoured cars on streets. Provisional government formed out of Duma - shots of Lvov and Kerensky. Desertions on war front. Shots of Tsar Nicholas and family prior to abdications. Footage/stills of Trotsky, Plekhanov and other revolutionaries. Zurich - shots of Lenin. Finland Station, Petrograd, to which Lenin arrives by sealed train. Losses on war front - shots of soldiers in retreat. Opposition erupts in Petrograd and Kerensky's troops open fire on crowd (scenes from Eisenstein's OCTOBER). Attempted right-wing coup - shots of soldiers in Red Square and on the march - Kerensky appeals to Lenin and others for help. Shots of Lenin speaking. Bolshevik takeover of key installations, scenes of popular rejoicing as the revolution continues. Russians under Lenin leave war - scenes of Trotsky arriving at Brest Litovsk to sign treaty. Final shots of doomed Tsar and family.
