Summary: In the turbulent political atmosphere of late 1945 a militia band of young Indonesian men receive military training at a village near Bandoeng (Bandung) in Java, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), while Japanese sentries, still well armed despite their surrender the previous month, stand guard at a nearby camp.
Description: Landscape view showing an open plain with a mountain rising in the distance. A squad of young men ('pemuda') in civilian dress marching. They march slowly with a high step. The group is supervised by two men in uniform, apparently Indonesian police officers. More footage of the men marching and wheeling. Marching in extended lines. Group of pemuda standing or sitting about. Close-up of a young man wearing a peci (an Indonesian fez of black felt). The men slowly lie down and lie prone before rising to their feet. The men slowly sit, as if adopting a seated firing position. Wide shot of the village green. The squad formed up. (Short section of footage with the cameraman's hand over the lens, presumably to provide a black leader.) Frame-filling close-ups of some of the young men, one of them wearing a peaked cap with a small red and white badge on the front. A file of men. The policeman who had been drilling the group. Men giving the 'Merdeka' ('Freedom') salute; they hold their up right hand, palm out, at shoulder height. Red and white flag of the Indonesian republic flying. Wide shot showing cyclists passing on a road in the foreground with the group of men and the green behind. Japanese sentry with his back to camera. Japanese sentry manning a Browning .30-calibre heavy machine gun (M1917). Japanese sentry with rifle. View of the sandbagged sentry post. A number of Japanese lorries. A Japanese sentry with fixed bayonet standing at the roadside. A Japanese armoured car with a soldier manning a Browning .30-calibre medium machine gun (M1919). Close-up of the machine gunner. A Japanese soldier in the back of the armoured car with his rifle levelled.
