Title:GENERAL DE GAULLE RETURNS TO FRANCE AFTER HIS FOUR-YEAR EXILE (PART 2) [Allocated Title]
Film Number:A70 45-2
Description: I. Maurice Schumann, a Free French radio announcer and Gaullist in Bayeux, introduces General de Gaulle to members of the large crowd gathered in the city's central park to hear him speak; Colonel Chandon (?) is on hand to take the bouquets of flowers from his chief. Standing on a podium decorated with Tricolour bunting and US and British flags, de Gaulle addresses the people of Bayeux; clearly visible among those standing in a semi-circle in front of him are Schumann, General Koenig and M Coulet (who has just been installed as Commissioner for Normandy).
II. Followed by a large and excited crowd, General de Gaulle, M Vienot and General Bethouart walk through the streets of Bayeux towards the Sous-Préfecture; numerous ordinary city folk and Resistance workers step out to greet him. Note the three AFPU cameramen and photographers at work covering the occasion and the presence of a large number of British servicemen (mainly 50th Division troops), in particular a lance-corporal who seems intent on following the camera. General Koenig and M Palewski and then Colonel Chandon (?) are seen meeting up with the three French leaders as the procession nears the Place de Château.

Notes: Summary: see with A70 45-1, 3 to 5, 46-11 for footage showing de Gaulle's visit to Normandy and with A70 34-1, 40-1, 46-10, 49-1 and 2, 57-11 for ciné material showing other VIPs - Churchill, HM King George VI etc - paying similar visits. This film should have been assembled thus: part II and part I. General Bethouart commanded French troops at Narvik during the disastrous Norwegian campaign of 1940.
Remarks: the cameraman had difficulty in coping with the subdued light under the trees in the park and the brightness outside. Best seen with the items of ciné material listed above, notably A70 45-1, 3, 46-11 which contain complementary, almost identical footage.
Documentation/associated material: or a bibliography, refer to the publications listed in A70 45-1.
