Title:WITH THE BRITISH FORCES IN ITALY - SEVEN DAYS LEAVE [Main Title]
Film Number:IWM 283
Summary: British troops enjoying rest and recreation, probably at Lake Garda, Italy, July 1918.
Description: The soldiers are from various regiments and branches. One group returns from bathing in the lake, carrying towels and wearing khaki drill uniforms and 'Wolseley' pattern sun helmets with badges on the side. Outdoor lunch is served for troops at long tables. A sergeants' mess is a large white tent with tablecloths and waiter service. Soldiers rest and drink in the village square while a regimental band plays. Four sergeants from different regiments, in close-up, drink together around one table. A small paddle steamer brings more troops across the lake on leave, and as it docks they disembark, many still carrying their weapons. Officers swim, row and play in the lake itself.
Technical Details: Format: 35mm
Number of items/reels/tapes: 1
Footage: 502 ft; Running time: 9 mins
Notes: Title: this is taken from the shotsheet.
Remarks: the unusually clear film quality provides some good views of the unorthodox uniforms and badges worn by the soldiers in Italy, and some good scenes of the village square.
