Summary: The Civil Service Rifles and Post Office Rifles of 47th (London) Division coming out of the line at Loos, and Number 1 Motor Ambulance Convoy concert party, Western Front, January 1916.
Description: I. The two battalions, otherwise respectively 15th and 8th Battalions, the London Regiment, march in very muddy greatcoats and caps through a rear area village, followed by their Red Cross contingent. They are being relieved by "Welsh Territorials", probably 4th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who march in the opposite direction along the road. The Loos Crassier (?) can be seen on the horizon ahead of them. The two London Regiment battalions continue on their march and board a troop train (carriages rather than trucks) back to their billets. Arriving there, they relax and start to scrape the mud off their equipment. They play improvised football among themselves, with a few French soldiers joining in. II. A small concert party of Number 1 Motor Ambulance Convoy entertains the rest of the convoy. It begins with an introduction by an officer leading into a joke conductor for the band and a comedy sketch involving a cowboy. In the middle of this a despatch rider on a motorcycle arrives with an urgent message, the men rush to their ambulances and drive off (acted).
