Film Number:IWM 379
Other titles:
Summary: British or Australian airmen testing captured German aeroplanes, possibly at Bickendorf aerodrome, Cologne, December 1918.
Description: A German aerodrome, where British aircrew (including a Captain Benson) and groundcrew pose for the camera. Some of them are wearing bush hats. In front of a hangar are four Fokker DVII fighters, one with its prop turning over. A pilot gets into one of the aircraft. The wrecks of two other Fokkers with their wings missing are guarded by British soldiers. The pilot settles into the Fokker DVII and it begins to roll forward. Another pilot sits, as a joke, in the cockpit of a wreck which has one wing bent and draped over obscuring its fuselage. Two of the Fokkers taxi towards and past the camera. A partially stripped wreck of a Junkers JI ground attack aircraft is looked over by the pilots. A line of the Fokker DVIIs carrying various distinctive squadron or personal markings. A pilot boards one of the planes, the German markings of which have been obscured, and it takes off, overflying the camera. Another view of the line of Fokkers, and of the aircraft taking off.
