Summary: Model ditching trials featuring the Miles Martinet.
Description: Weight: 6000lbs, Model scale 2/15th Apart from the split flaps, which were attached at scale strength, the model was overstrong. This must be borne in mind when interpreting the results. First, model flattened out into a 1º glide. Flaps up I.A.S.: 88mph. Note the clean entry with no tendency to porpoise. Flaps 23º I.A.S. 76Mph. Although a wing has dropped unfortunately, the behaviour is still good. Flaps 90º I.A.S. 68Mph. Again a wing has dropped, but the behaviour is still good. Now the model will be flown on from a 5º glide. Flaps up IAS 107mph. Note the marked increase in attitude immediately after impact. Flaps 23º IAS 96mph. Again there is an increase in attitude immediately after impact. Flaps 90º IAS 88mph. At this speed the increase in attitude after impact is less marked. A few tests with the Vokes air cleaner fitted show that it has no effect. Model flattened out into a 1º glide. Flaps up IAS 88mph. Model flown on from a 5º glide. Flaps up IAS 107 mph. Flaps 90º IAS 88 mph. With the flag target stowage fitted, the model is liable to porpoise. Model flattened out into a 1º glide. Flaps up IAS 88 mph. Model flown on from a 5º glide. Flaps up IAS 107 mph. Note that the model porpoises off the water. Flaps 90º IAS 88 mph. Again the model porpoises off the water. The conclusions from these tests is that it is best to alight slowly with flaps down, making a good flatten out. The flaps do not cause diving. The model is overstrong, and full scale experience has shown that the Martinet is liable to break up if landed badly, especially in rough or choppy sea.
