Summary: Outworking, "taking work to the workers", as a partial solution to the manpower problem in total war.
Description: The basic concept is explained in a detailed example, a factory solving a production bottleneck by giving the (unskilled) job concerned to casual workers in a village hall, working for factory scale pay without factory discipline. Other examples of simple jobs (eg frames for parachute packing, armature coils) outside the factory follow - mothers of schoolchildren work in a clubroom near the school; part of a private house, or a furniture showroom department also become workshops - some 'kitchen table work' is done in worker's own home. Three examples of outwork carried out by people with other jobs (firemen, London Underground workers, theatre chorus girls). Film closes with a cross-cutting sequence between outworkers in a country house making throat microphones, and throat mikes in battle conditions.
