Title:ROYAL NAVY MEDIA TRAINING EXAMPLES [Allocated Title]
Film Number:BFO 124
Other titles:COLLECTION OF ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE TAPES [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: An instructional film on how to liaise with the media, presumably comprised of fictional stories. Further sections show how not to conduct a Q.C. interview to assess a Naval rating's performance, followed by the short instructional films "Fire Control" and "Fall of Shot".
Description: The first section is comprised a series of short mock interviews, listed below:
The Royal Marines arrive at «HMS Nelson», which increases the threat to security posed by terrorist activities. Interviews with Captain Dick Strange (commanding officer of «HMS Nelson»), Lieutenant-Commander Mike Waythe and Joe Martyn, who acts as a local reporter who got onto the base using a fake identification card.
A Harpoon anti ship missile slips whilst being loaded onto type 23 Duke class frigate «HMS Norfolk» and hits the side of the ship. Interviews with Commander Andrew Trevithick (commanding officer of «HMS Norfolk») and Captain Keith Watterson conducted by reported Sue Saville.
The second section is comprised of an instructional film (1994) showing how not to carry out assessment interviews on subordinate personnel. (Six minutes)
The third section is an extract from an instructional film entitled "Joint Approach" showing how Royal Naval base fires are tackled by both Ministry of Defence and public sector fire crews.
Then follows an instructional film entitled "FALL OF SHOT". This film explains the concept of spotting the fall of shot for Primary medium range surface firings. Target audience for this instructional video are OM2 (AW) and JOM (AW) Naval Ratings.
The final section is entitled "RIB Awareness": a training video on the boat handling of small craft, concentrating on RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) and the need to be aware of risks involved when using such craft.
Note that all news stories in the first section appear to be fictional and are a collection of TV reports, presumably used to teach Naval personnel how to conduct themselves in front of reporters and cameras. Also see ADM 2716 which is comprised similar reports, using many of the same people.
